It takes thirty seconds, it needs no other make-up and it has not gone out of fashion in a hundred years. The secret is that there is not one red lip. The same idea, five moods. ## First, find your red Reds fall into two families. Blue-reds are cool: think of a cherry. Orange-reds are warm: think of a tomato. Hold each one next to your face in daylight. One of them will make your skin look clear and your teeth look white. The other will make you look tired. It is that simple, and it is different for everyone. As a general guide, cool reds suit fair and very deep skin, and warm reds suit olive and golden skin. But the mirror is a better guide than any rule. ## 1\. The classic This is the full, matte, precise red lip of old films. It needs a little time. Line the lips with a pencil in the same shade. Fill in with a brush, starting at the centre. Blot with a tissue, then apply a second layer. Clean the edge with a little concealer on a flat brush. ![A lip brush gives a sharper edge than the tube. Wear the classic with bare eyes, brushed brows and clean skin. It is strong enough to be the only thing on your face. ## 2\. The stain For daytime, the stain is easier. Press the lipstick onto the centre of the lips with a finger and blend it outwards, so the colour fades at the edges. It looks as if you have eaten a bowl of cherries. The gloss A red gloss is young and fresh. Use a sheer red balm, or put a clear gloss over a stain. It will not last through lunch, and that is fine. Carry it with you. The gloss suits summer, a white shirt and hair that is a little untidy. ## 4\. The deep red In autumn and winter, move towards brick, wine and berry. These darker reds are elegant in the evening and surprisingly easy by day, if you keep the texture soft. A small mirror and a cotton bud are all you need in your bag. ## 5\. The bitten lip This is the most modern version. Use a lip pencil only. Draw over the whole lip, press your lips together and soften the edge with a fingertip. It is matte, it lasts all day and it looks like your own lips on a very good day. ## The technique that changes everything Whichever red you choose, prepare the lips first. Dry lips make red lipstick look old. 1. Rub the lips gently with a warm, wet cloth 2. Apply a thin layer of balm and wait two minutes 3. Blot the balm away with a tissue 4. Apply the colour 💡 **Make it last.** After the first layer, lay a single sheet of tissue over your lips and dust a little loose powder through it. Then add the second layer. The colour will stay through coffee and conversation. ## What to wear with it A red lip is an accessory, like a good pair of earrings. It works best when the rest is simple. Our favourite combinations are these. - A white shirt and jeans - A black roll-neck - A grey suit with nothing under the jacket - A navy coat and a bare face Avoid a strong eye at the same time. Choose one: the eyes or the mouth. ## How much to spend The most expensive lipstick is not the best. In our tests, a 12-euro red from a pharmacy brand lasted as long as one at 45 euros. You pay more for a heavier case, a nicer smell and a wider choice of shades. If you wear red every day, those things are worth it. If you wear it twice a month, they are not. #### My lipstick bleeds into fine lines. What can I do? Use a lip pencil first, and choose a matte formula. Creamy and glossy reds move more. A little translucent powder around the mouth also helps. #### Does red lipstick make thin lips look thinner? A dark matte red can. Choose a brighter red with a soft shine, and blur the edge a little. ## One last thing The best red lip is the one you forget you are wearing. If you check the mirror every ten minutes, the shade or the texture is wrong. Try the stain. Then, on a day when you feel brave, try the classic. It is only make-up, and it comes off.
